TP or not TP

From BoingBoing, a lovely little bit about Victorian toilet paper:

Lately when I think of toilet paper* it brings to mind a throwaway line from The Satanic Verses (which I haven't read past the first chapter because it was a library book and whoever had read it before me had left long stringy hairs sprinkled throughout); one of the character's mothers says something about England and questions how her son will keep clean because "they wipe their bottoms with paper there." Heh. Depending on the day, I have to agree.
